zero8hundred began, in 2014, as a planning project, convened by the San Diego Grantmakers Military Family Support Working Group and a broad coalition of community leaders and organizations, called the Military Transition Support Project (MTSP). This coalition gathered the input of hundreds of community members and incorporated national best practices to develop a comprehensive plan to connect San Diego’s sectors – military, legislative, non-profit, employment, education and philanthropy. The plan focused on supporting transitioning military families 9 months prior to leaving active duty service through 12 months post-service. The program has since expanded to include support for Post 9-11 veterans, within 12 months of separation from active duty service, as well as Reservists and California National Guardsmen during their demobilization phase.
We are convinced that transitioning service members, veterans and their families should be better off for having served their country. We stand together to pause, salute, and support these military members and their families who are planning to reside in the San Diego, Orange, Riverside and Imperial counties. The zero8hundred name illustrates the promise that comes with a brand new day, and captures our communities' resolve that it is time for a bold new approach to the transition experience for service members and their families. zero8hundred is here to bridge the gap and leverage the broad array of resources that are available to ease transitions for those who will be joining our community.
For transitioning service members, veterans and their families, it is time to “Navigate Your Future.”
The details - how will zero8hundred achieve this?
zero8hundred provides a one-stop approach, to support transitioning service members, veterans and their spouses. Through 1:1 connections with experienced Peer Navigators, program participants design and execute their own personalized transition journey. Peer Navigators are former veterans or military spouses, who are trained counselors and resource experts, committed to walking alongside zero8hundred program participants to help them navigate their most successful post-service future. Through a unique partnership with the armed forces, zero8hundred is presented during transition classes at Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard bases in the San Diego region. The program is also presented to military members, Reservists and California National Guardsmen and spouses at select community venues throughout the four county area we serve. Transitioning service members, veterans and their spouses have the option to sign up for the zero8hundred program to receive guidance and support from a Peer Navigator. Once they register, they become zero8hundred “VIPs” (for veterans or spouses in process). Then, their Peer Navigator proactively calls them from 9 months before until 12 months after active duty separation to discuss transition challenges and opportunities and to guide them to local area resources and services best suited for their needs. zero8hundred provides ongoing support by linking VIPs and their families to a broad range of resources and opportunities to help them successfully transition into civilian life.
zero8hundred uses a Veteran’s Wellness Model focused around the four key pillars considered essential for self-sufficiency: Education and Jobs, Basic Needs, Health and Wellness, and Personal/Social Connections.
In addition to Peer Navigation, zero8hundred provides a comprehensive easy-to-use Internet portal provides information on services and resources specific to the San Diego, Orange, Riverside and Imperial county region. This bridges the gap between transitioning members and resources, and it is available to anyone seeking transition resources in the region.
