San Diego County has the 3rd highest population of veterans in the United States and is the number one destination for veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. Every year, over 20,000 Sailors and Marines stationed in San Diego leave military service, a third of whom are expected to stay in the San Diego community. Approximately 6,500 transitioning service members settle in Orange County each year. Studies show that the post 9/11 transitioning population is one of great promise. Individuals are well trained, team oriented, and hardworking, but they can also face challenges with transitioning to civilian life that existing community support in San Diego and Orange County can help resolve. Service members who successfully transition into the San Diego and Orange County communities are a great asset to our region!
