In January 2014, a cross-sector collaborative of more than 100 San Diego county public, private and military community leaders and organizations formed zero8hundred, as a fiscally sponsored military/veteran support organization. This coalition recognized the need for a coordinated cross-system effort to address the challenges that transitioning Post 9/11 active duty military servicemembers/spouses and recent veterans were facing. These obstacles included specifically, but not limited to, un/under-employment, shortage of affordable housing options, physical, mental and emotional injuries, and confusion about where to go for services and resources best suited to their specific transition needs. To succeed post-service, our transitioning service members/spouses often need support in establishing post-service goals that are ambitious but attainable, and then assistance in identifying and connecting to the best suited resources and services that can help them attain their goals. zero8hundred provides this assistance by teaming up transitioning personnel 1:1 with a military-connected (veteran or military spouse) counselor – referred to as a Resource & Outreach Specialist – who comes alongside them to help identify their unique needs and then connects them to those organizations and resources available to meet those needs anywhere in San Diego, Riverside, Imperial or Orange counties. Becoming a nationally recognized independent 501(c)3 non-profit organization in January 2019, zero8hundred has, to date, proactively linked over 3,200 transitioning service members and their spouses to the broad range of community resources and opportunities to best support their employment, education, basic needs, health and well-being, and social/community connections, easing the transition into their civilian community.
For transitioning service members, Reservists, National Guardsmen, recent veterans and their spouses (including Gold Star spouses), it is time to “Navigate Your Future.”
To proactively link transitioning service members, recent veterans and their families to a broad range of resources and opportunities in the community, helping them successfully transition to civilian life.
